What is the difference between an MQM strike and a PTI strike?

PTI chief Imran Khan on arrival in Karachi. PHOTO: RABIA ALI/EXPRESS It’s that time again. The city’s roads are busy with protestors and crowds are congregating to listen to their political leader. TV anchors and websites of media houses are keeping everyone abreast of the latest happenings. There is a political strike, a protest march, in Karachi and we have been through plenty of those in past few decades. So much so that there is practically a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) that we all follow. Stock up the night before, watch early news to check routes, head to work if we can, call home to say we are there safely, get told by security to leave because it is getting rough, get home and watch the news. Repeat at next strike and keep decreasing turnaround times. However, this time it feels different and as a child of the 90s, a particularly strike and strife filled decade even for Karachi, I can tell. The biggest difference is that the strike call was not by the usual suspects, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM). Sure there are other parties that call for strikes but they have as much effect as Indian pacers on dead pitches, honest tries but nothing to discuss at the next day’s water cooler. Word is that two, just two, entities control Karachi’s barometer, Abdullah Shah Ghazi and the leader of the MQM, one Altaf Hussain. Since Ghazi Sahib intervenes only when it’s about to get very wet and windy, which is seldom, it’s really the MQM that was supposed to be experts at impacting the city. No, this strike is by the (relatively) new kids on the block as far as city-wide strikes are controlled. The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), now in its fourth month of protests and third phase of action, has decided to do shut downs in different parts of the country to put pressure on the ruling party. After Faisalabad, Khan Sahib and his passionistas are in Karachi to keep the protests simmering away and hence the call for today’s strike. But this strike is different from the ones we are used to and the signs are all to see. Here are some of the major differences between a PTI strike and an MQM one that I have noticed so far: Massi (maid) magic The first sign that things are different is when the cleaning maid shows up. Just when we had expected to clean the house that looked as if it has been hit by a tornado, a tornado that also entertained guests the night before, and resigned ourselves to our fate lo and behold the most loved household member waltzes with nary an excuse. We asked her about the hartal (strike) and she replied, “Yes there is a strike but it is not the dangerous sort. I know I will be able to make it here and go back easily.” Viva la massi! Dude, where’s my fear? I started to get dressed for work expecting my mother to say what she always does during an MQM strike which is basically along the lines of, “Are you crazy?” “No one will be there.” “Don’t take the nice car!” “Have you signed your will?” I went to her armed with my typical responses of being brave and deadlines. She first looked confused at my dramatic pause and then seeing that I was ready, she waved me off with a nonchalant goodbye. Confusion was rising and I had to ask, “Ammi, aren’t you worried about the strike”? Sipping her morning tea she replied, “No. The massi’s here, she’s the one I was most worried about, and this is a PTI strike.” Then it hit me – there’s no sense of fear, no lingering feeling of menace. It’s a strike but what are the PTI people going to do, slogan me to death? Cheerio off to work! Keep on truckin’ When I got to the roads, the way was blocked by some people waving flags. During a normal strike, I would retrace my way with the alacrity of a deer chancing upon a tiger at lunch time but fear factor way down, I approached them and asked about the situation. “Sorry about the blockage but we have left alternate routes open. We don’t want to make the city impassable.” I asked around and was shown the way. This was something new for me. The city was closed down but one could in fact move about. Let’s go! Flower power? As I drove off, it struck me that the boys, alright very young men, were decidedly different from my previous experience of strikers. Yes, they would burn tires and have the usual paraphernalia, what’s a strike without some burning tires right, but they looked harmless otherwise. The raffish clothes and shades were more promenade than politics and the female protestors were the sort you wanted to do homework for back in university. Some protestors were having tea and samosas while others preening about thinking themselves as modern day Che Guevaras, taking selfies from expensive phones. And wait, was that the guy from the dramas and his friend the model? This looked way more fun than my last office shindig and if I wasn’t late for work I may have joined in. Viva la party! Missing hardware So far there was no sign of the other strike staple guns. Not even an itty bitty 9mm or 38 revolver. There was something unnerving about this Karachi protest and its lack of proper protocol. No guns, no violence? I even gamely tried to pass on a stick to a protestor and he thought I am selling sugar cane. I tried to reason with him, don’t do it for you, do it for the media reps, what the hell will they report? Spare a thought for the screaming talking heads who descend upon us at the sign of any hits. Do you want them to actually do some real work and talk about issues? The sadist refused and I left shaking my head. Aren’t revolutions supposed to be violent? This was turning out to be more ‘kiss kiss’ and less ‘bang bang’. Business as usual I pulled into the parking lot and trudged to my desk. I was barely seated when the smell of fresh parathas assailed my senses. Some colleagues were having them and I was reminded of the hollowness inside, the hollowness that comes from a missed breakfast. Since the shops would be closed and this has to be a home product, I sauntered over hoping for some largess. There was but little left but I was gracious with my compliments. “Your mother is a great cook”, I told my colleague hoping to catch him early next time. “Oh this is not from home. I got it from the dhaba across the road.” It hit me. Shops are open? On a strike? I rushed over to the dhaba and while he fixed my breakfast, I asked him about closing shop. “Nobody has told us to shut down. You can if you want to and go to the protest but we have regular customers and can’t”, the owner replied. So no goons closing shops? No na maloom afraad? No hungry days? Viva la food! New spaces The final thing was the demographic spread of the protests. Normally, the sit-ins are concentrated in the middle income areas. But PTI has garnered support from those who until recently were outside the political realm. They cut across the social economic lines, the well-heeled rubbing shoulders, figuratively speaking, with the labourers and so the protests were spread from Teen Talwar to University Road and beyond. Not to say that other parties don’t have support from different income groups, but their sit-ins don’t usually spread to Clifton and its nearby areas. Has PTI given a glimpse of the future or will Karachi be subjected to same old soon enough? Looking at all this, it seems today’s strike could be changing my SOP soon. The real victory though will be if the city never has to be shut down by anyone. For everyone’s sake, let’s hope we get to that stage soon.

Cornered tigress: Female PTI activist fights off advancing mob Published: December 8, 2014

ISLAMABAD: Even amidst chaotic scenes in Faisalabad, scenes of a lone woman fighting off an angry and advancing mob were the most dramatic. Surrounded by government supporters in Faisalabad on Monday, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s Lubna Malik truly did fight like a cornered tiger. Workers of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz surrounded and began advancing on Malik, the lone woman, at Ghanta Ghar chowk, after she raised PTI’s ‘Go Nawaz Go’ slogan during an interview with a television channel. But Malik was not intimidated. Malik recalled the ordeal while speaking to The Express Tribune. “I was in the middle of an interview with some TV channels when I raised the Go Nawaz Go slogan in response to PML-N workers’ Ro Imran Ro slogan and they started gathering around me. “They (PML-N workers) started using abusive language, picked up their sticks and started marching towards me,” she added. Malik who reached the venue for the address at 11:15 am says she managed to get her hands on a stick too. “I managed to get one stick with which I tried to stop them, at first, and then started beating them up to push them back.” Responding to a question, she said, “The police was deployed there but they did not come forward to rescue me,” adding, “The police did not cooperate because it was taking PML-N’s side.” The PTI leader who was seen swinging at the PML-N supporters with her stick as they gathered around her, claimed, “PML-N workers were following me wherever I was going, I had almost taken a complete round of Ghanta Ghar Chowk in a bid to reach my car, but they followed me.” The scene lasted for around four to six minutes but Malik boldly faced the rowdy PML-N workers, unflinching and determined. The PML-N workers continued to gather her till PTI supporters and passers-by intervened and asked to let her go. “It was then that the police came forward and joined the rescuers, including members of civil society and the PTI youth wing,” she said. Shifting her focus to the deadly clash which erupted between her party and PML-N workers, which claimed the life of one PTI activist, Malik said, “The government has taken the collusion course.” “This does not happen anywhere else in the world that the government starts protesting along with the opposition,” she added. Ironically enough, not only does the gritty Malik hail from a political family historically associated with the PML-N and the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid in Sargodha, she is also the first female politician from her family. Having studied Art at the National College of Arts, with a degree in ceramics, she has been a part of PTI for the past nine years. Previously, Malik was the district president of the party but is currently officiating as the party’s Punjab Women Wing joint secretary.

[Testimonial by Rehab Abbasi on #AzadiSquare Movement]

I am a 16 year old girl from Islamabad and my dream is to bring change in my country in any way possible. I want to be in army but my dream of making change to this country may not be fulfilled by getting into army right away. First I want to work for PTI and wake the people of Pakistan up. And maybe my dream of making change is going to be fulfilled like this, Working for PTI has always been my ambition (it was actually like this : first work for PTI then go to army) because in the Chairman of PTI, I see a true leader who actually wants something good for his nation and for the next generation. A leader who has left everything for his country. His life revolves around Pakistan. Unlike our most of the leaders he never craves for money ... what he craves for is success of this nation, the rising of the nation and its people. A leader whose mission is not just to make the PM resign but to unite the people of Pakistan and make them stand as ONE. A leader who is known by rich, poor, old, young, literate, illiterate, and even by non muslims from around the world. And a leader who treats everyone equally. My leader is IMRAN KHAN, a Khan who has taken the name of Khans and the nation to the next level. "Justice, Humanity and Self Esteem", these three words are not just Imran Khan's goal but now these three words and the meaning and the reason behind them is now my goal too. Spread these three words and infuse their meaning in every Pakistanis heart is now my goal too. Just like my leader now i also have to work hard and struggle to unite this nation and make it stand as ONE. I think what my leader is doing is exemplary for those who can't raise their voices for their rights because they are slaves to their rulers and to money their rulers are feeding them with. Pakistan is the country that was supposed to be known for its beauties, united people, and especially for its PEACE. But the Pakistan we live in or should i say the Pakistan the is represented by our leaders os the Pakistan that is full of terrorism and violence... This is not Pakistan. But Allah has given us another opportunity to make Pakistan a country that our Quaid wanted it to be. Allah has blessed us with a leader like Quaid, who actually wants good for the country and he is Imran Khan. I was never into politics and actually hated it but the day Imran Khan started his Azadi March, that was the day my political awareness activated. I now search for the truth. I will work for PTI and my country till me last breath and will definitely bring change to my beloved nation. Because that time is not far when we will be living in a Naya Pakistan and will be breathing air of freedom. And in the end there is one thing for my Kaptaan "THERE ARE MANY WHO ARE PROUD TO BE PAKISTANIS, BUT A VERY FEW THAT PAKISTAN IS PROUD OF" And you my Kaptaan are one those who Pakistan is proud of. Pakistan Zindabad!

[Testimonial by Wasim Wazir on #AzadiSquare Movement]

"66 days with My Kaptaan" Today is the 66th day since I am here and part of the historic struggle. I was destined to be at this Dharna consistently. I assert this as over the years, I have had many options to leave the city and move out, but nature contrived positively to keep me here. Initially, I was not sure about the intense need of attending the dharna, But slowly, it became clear to me that it was not some run-of-the-mill political / election campaign. I have finally realized that its an awakening/Social/Political awareness campaign when I witnessed the start of struggle against the VIP culture by offloading 2 VIPs from a plane. The more it will go on, It will shift / inject more freedom in people's minds. Go Nawaz Go is not a slogan against a specific person, it has become the voice of the oppressed against the corrupt ruling elite which this nation is facing for more than six decades. India had their hero Nehru alive for good amount of time after their freedom to make sure the powers be shifted to common man to some good extant. We have been enslaved & divided consistently in the name of religion, ethnicity & sects - this has happened through a very well organised campaign. Every now and then we see different kind of fights in our society, Sometimes Shia/Sunni, Sometimes Urdu speaking/Punjabi/Pathan/Balooch/Sindhi, Sometimes through TTP. Somehow every time these players judge our threshold by igniting violence according to their requirements and making sure to keep this country on continuous downward spiral. The numbers of the oppressed have increased drastically that these corrupt elite got caught in their own game of power. Imran Khan has put the breaks on at this malicious looting spree of status Quo by mobilizing the masses from lower, middle & upper middle class. I am not sure if Imran Khan will be alive or Chairman of PTI at the time of a complete visible change, but he has initiated & placed the first brick of a solid nation building. Whenever I feel less motivated, I recall two precious moments in these 66 days: 1) The late night speech of Imran Khan on 15th Aug in heavy rain at around 3:30 AM. 2) The night of 31st Aug. Fighting against the brutality of police & at times when we felt exhausted and backed off few yards back. At those moments I can't forget the words of Khan "Mere Nowjawano"... And we rushed back towards the Container. Almighty has brought us this far, and it's not that long remaining when we will achieve our aim and get true freedom for the nation! Its all about #Dignity #Faith & #Persistence!

[Testimonial by Hira Maher on Sargodha Jalsa]

[Testimonial by Hira Maher on Sargodha Jalsa] Karachi, Lahore, Mianwali, Multan and now Sargodha, the city of eagles also witnessed a historical Jalsa. People showed their support for Khan and broke all the shackles of fear and slavery. I was so excited to attend the Jalsa in my hometown. The journey which started dating back 13th August from Zaman Park, Lahore towards Islamabad. Now this arduous anti-government and anti-status quo protest is not confined to a single place, as the man of steel is disseminating his message all around the country from one corner to another. He assimilated the scattered masses under shared common goals because, his purpose is not to capture the power but to wake up the nation. The preparations started 2 days before Jalsa, I observed an ebullient and cheerful crowd on the night of 16 October in the ground of the stadium. They were enlightening candles and praying for the safety of people. The stage was all set for 17 October as our very own leader had his eye on arrangements in order to ward off any unpleasant situation with the help of city administration. Finally, we witnessed a PTI Jalsa with best stage management, security and rescue teams and a squad of 40 doctors were also there to take on any exigency and to tackle ambiguity. Six doors of the stadium were opened. I entered through one secured for women opposite to the backyard of Sargodha university after the screening process due to the security reasons. Basically, Sargodha is a city of jutt clans surrounded by large numbers of villages. They don't allow their women to attend such political events and gathering quite often, but a mass exodus of women from their house was enough to say. This is called “TABDEELI”. People of all classes were there, from poor to mediocre, from mediocre to opulent. They came to support Imran Khan for the sake of the betterment of their country, for the sake of their own rights and for the bright future of their children. Well, who says that PTI is mainly a party of youths. I saw people of every age group from a few months to 80 to 90 years old. I would like to mention two avid and elderly women supporters of round about 85 years old. They draped their shoulders with PTI flags. Their painted faces and a hope for Naya Pakistan were delineating an utterly optimistic image. People love their leader no matter what caste and creed they belonged to, they were there to show their love and support for Imran Khan. Everyone was vehemently active and energetic to welcome Khan, and then Imran Khan came with the same spark in his eyes. An unflinching determination and hope as he never gives up. While reaching on stage, he beckoned to the entire crowd. After the speeches of representatives, Sheikh Rasheed and Shah Mehmood Qureshi addressed to the jam packed stadium of Sargodha. They encouraged peasants and talked about their due rights. Shah Mehmood Qureshi invigorated farmers with the Slogan of "Jiyoooooo Jutaaaaaa" Enthusiastic stalwarts of PTI were anxiously waiting to hear their leader while chanting the slogan of “Go Nawaz Go”. Khan took over the charge of the podium, He started his speech with the name of Allah Almighty as he always does, then he thanked Sargodhians for their massive support and for such a historic crowd. In his speech Khan talked about the rights of poor people. They can't even pay for their basic rights let alone the hefty electricity bills. He expressed his concern about education that, how quality education is important for every child, especially for girls-the nation builders. As always, he was very lucid in expressing his viewpoints. He wants to pull the nation out of the quagmire. People may have different opinion, but ostensibly every sagacious and wise person knows that Khan is very conspicuous in his every single stance. We have seen a dream of making Naya Pakistan, where we can practice equal justice for all. And that day we promised Khan to speak the truth and yes, earth is the witness. Like many others I also want my children to be born in Naya Pakistan. The one we are going to make under the leadership of khan. Well, seems like PTI is infused into the mind of every sensible person. Whenever I go to somewhere and ask people for their party affiliation, upon finding someone with same status quo parties. I feel sorry for their slave minds like they are doing an injustice to themselves and their generations to come. And that day is not so far away when this condition of servitude will prevail no more. One can see a perceptible incline in public confidence towards him and that's his real victory. Yes, once again Khan won our hearts. Shaheen stood against VIP, against the status quo, against Badshahat and against the dynasty. The momentous evening was ended with the National Anthem. While leaving the ground I was thinking we must say thanks to God for his accolade. He is indeed a great leader and its an irrefutable fact! After coming back to home, I was so much obsessed with this song "Muskarata rahta hon, Duniya sy mai kahta hon...." It was such a gracious experience for me and then the day ended up with a contented smile on a lot of faces. And yes, don’t forget to say Naya Pakistannnnnnn Inshallahhhh!

[Testimonial on #AzadiSquare Movement by Sajida Baloch]

[Testimonial on #AzadiSquare Movement by Sajida Baloch] Another day comes to an end at Azadi Sqaure and I come back home feeling satisfied that I am part of this Azadi Movement, the movement which is going to change Pakistan forever for me and my coming generations. Like many, I have been supporting Imran Khan since childhood. I remember when I was a child and used to mimic Imran Khan’s speech in front of my family. I still remember when I used to tell them that only brave leader Imran Khan is going to save Pakistan and think for its betterment. Many of them used to mock me that I am supporting a party who can never form government but I always used to believe in my captain. 30th October, 2011 was one of the happiest days of my life when my captain was accepted as a major political force by everyone in country. Party kept growing; my belief in him kept getting stronger. I saw him doing party elections, giving party tickets, best election campaign ever and then unfortunately falling down. I attended the final Jalsa in Islamabad on 9th May night and voted for Bat on 11th May, 2013 for our dreams to be fulfilled. NA48 got vacant and my most favorite PTI leader Asad Umar was candidate from here. I campaigned for him and when he won I was really happy that he will represent me in national assembly. Next few months, as the evidence kept emerging, we came to know how this election was most rigged election in Pakistan’s history. Imran Khan tried to get justice from election tribunals, ECP, parliament and SCP. When all failed, he started public gatherings and finally he announced the Azadi March towards Islamabad on 14th August, 2014, my very own city. Excitement and passion reached peak high waiting for the day. On 14th August, he left Lahore. We kept waiting for him here in Islamabad and Imran Khan after getting historic welcomes in different cities on his way reached Islamabad between 15th and 16th August, night. Probably for the first time in Pakistan’s history, a leader delivered speech at Fajar time in full rain. The last 65 days of the longest Sit-In of World’s history has changed Pakistan forever. I go to the Azadi Dharna at least 4 or 5 times a week. Every day, I go to my job in morning and the events of previous night and the coming night keeps on exciting me. I come back from my work in the evening and start getting ready to go to Azadi Square. One day I wear caps and bands, the other day I wear Imran Khan’s kurta and some other day I wear red and green color. Most special are the weekends when majority of Islamabad and Rawalpindi is there. The separate enclosure for women at the Dharna makes it really comfortable for all of us to come daily and feel like a family. I have met many of my friends from twitter at the Azadi Square. Security team of PTI does a wonderful job there. We have celebrated women’s day, 50 days anniversary, youth day and even Eid here. Announcements of Faisal Javed Khan, speeches of Murad Saeed, Sheikh Rasheed, Shah Mahmood Qureshi and different PTI leaders keep the atmosphere full of passion. Dj Butt and PTI anthems keep me and the crowd charged. Every day after work and attending Dharna, I get tired but the speeches and stamina of Imran Khan keeps me and thousands other fresh. All these 65 days, I have seen Imran Khan leading us all from the front. From his first speech in Rain at fajar time to the youth day with all the social media volunteers, he has always been with us. I can never forget him sleeping at the top of container, getting wet in heavy rains, roaming around Azadi town among his supporters and doing daily speeches inspiring thousands at the site and millions around Pakistan. I can never forget the day when he led us to Parade Avenue speaking to all of us from top of the container. I can never forget when he took tear gas shelling along with all his supporters. His birthday and Eid celebrations with us will be part of my memory always. Despite all the criticism from opponents, has has been consistent on his stance for Insaf during the last 18 years. Today, he is stronger than ever. His message keeps on going everywhere and I have seen myself increasing people at Azadi Sqaure from all over Pakistan. I even met celebrities joining Imran Khan’s message especially mentionable are Hamza Ali Abbasi and Bilal Lashari. Despite all the criticism on women from our opponents, the women of Pakistan and especially Islamabad are standing with him stronger than ever. His belief in the women of Pakistan and that they are main part of this revolution makes us stronger and stronger. His belief in Allah makes me believe in him more and more. His teachings about speaking truth, being fearless, selfless and always standing with justice is making us all one nation. Status Quo is already feeling the pressure and that time is not far away when Imran Khan will take all these wickets. These 65 and coming days of Azadi Dharna will be part of my life always. I am so used to all this now. Sometimes I think that when “Go Nawaz Go” happens, what will be my activity in the evening? But then I see at the larger picture. Every night, when I come back home, I sleep with a relaxed mind, a happy mind. I tell myself that I am part of the movement which is changing Pakistan for generations to come. I tell myself that I am citizen of Islamabad. A city which was called dead is now the city where history is being written. Sometimes I get hopeless but when the tune of “Go Nawaz Go” comes in my mind, I smile and say “BuruNawazBuru” in Balochi language and sleep peacefully for a next exciting day at Azadi Square.
